Burkey Construction is pleased to announce that The American Sports Builders Association (ASBA) has named Alvernia University’s PLEX as a Distinguished Facility for its indoor running track.
This complex is the highlight of the university’s new East Campus. Spanning 15 acres and adding more than 100,000 square feet of academic and recreational space to campus, the PLEX is the most ambitious expansion in Alvernia’s history.
The 35,000 square-foot academic wing houses a state-of-the-art teaching lab and interprofessional education programs in subjects ranging from athletic training to nursing to social work. This piece of the project was conventional construction and accounted for the facility needs of various departments in its final design.
Alvernia’s 70,000 square-foot field house is designed to provide indoor recreation space for a variety of athletic activities. In addition to four full-sized sports courts, the six lane NCAA competition-level indoor track is the centerpiece of this space.
This section of the PLEX is also available to the university’s local community of residents, high schools, and clubs for recreational use.
Scoring for this distinction is determined by a variety of factors, including design, sitework, innovation, and more. Winning projects are those with scores that meet or exceed the standard.
