On April 9, 2026, Finanta Credit Union celebrated the grand opening of their new Reading branch with a ribbon cutting ceremony. The newly completed facility at 240 Penn Street consists of 7,500 square feet of restored historic space, including a teller station and waiting area, two large conference rooms, six private offices, an open office area, and several employee support spaces. The location is fully bilingual in English and Spanish and will serve the City of Reading with a community-focused strategy of financial products and services.
Due to past fire and water damage, the existing building was in very poor condition, with the back areas at risk of possible structural failure. To save the building, Burkey demolished and reconstructed half of the roof, removed a structural brick wall, and stabilized two additional load-bearing walls. Once the building was secured and weather-tight, our project team and subcontractors conducted an interior renovation that would extend the second floor, install a new stair tower, and all new HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and fire protection systems.
The primary intent of the design was to introduce new modern finishes like glass, ceramic tile, and more while highlighting some of the existing, historic fixtures of the building. The wood floor in the open office area was completely restored, and the walls were stripped back to expose the original brick.
Burkey partnered with Stuart and Associates Architects, Inc., MK Architects, McHugh Engineering, Slate Structural Engineers, and C2C Design Group on this transformative project.
