Project Overview
This 40,000 square-foot building had been vacant for several years, showing signs of deterioration, before being purchased by the Yocum Institute for Arts Education. The organization brought Burkey on to renovate the space.
Burkey's work included replacing large windows in the front of the structure with new glazing in a manner that paid homage to the original art deco-style facade, which is brick with terracotta trim and accents. This style continued through the interior of the building, including the patterned porcelain ceramic tiles that paved the lobbies.
Two-thirds of a pre-engineered metal structure were removed at the southwest corner of the building, providing both open and partially-covered outdoor space for the Institute's students and guests to enjoy.
